Setting up and operating the AI workstation

The AI Workstation is our internal developer platform (IDP) for developing and operating AI applications and data products. The aim is to enable data scientists and ML engineers to implement use cases more quickly, in a more standardised manner, and with a high degree of autonomy. [Threat mod...orkstation | Outlook]

The platform follows a modular approach with clear principles such as GitOps, Infrastructure-as-Code, decentralised ownership and self-service. It provides key building blocks – from standardised development environments and Kubernetes-based runtime environments to integrated GenAI services and MLOps components. A key focus is on the continuous development of a scalable, highly automated developer platform that increasingly provides self-service functionalities and is being expanded to include modern AI services (e.g. MS Foundry, Databricks).

The role focuses in particular on the further development of the platform in the areas of cloud infrastructure, platform automation and developer experience.

Anforderungen

Your responsibilities:

• As a hands-on Platform Engineer, you will contribute to the further development of our AI Workstation and take responsibility for key infrastructure and automation components.
• You will work within an agile environment (Scrum / SAFe), where requirements are managed via a prioritised backlog, and you will implement these independently from a technical perspective.

Platform Operations & Infrastructure

• Ensuring stable and scalable platform operations (Azure, Kubernetes)
• Operation, maintenance and further development of Kubernetes clusters and platform services
• Provisioning and management of cloud resources (Azure)

Infrastructure-as-Code & GitOps

• Development and maintenance of IaC modules (Terraform / OpenTofu)
• Implementation and further development of GitOps deployments (e.g. ArgoCD)
• Building clearly structured, maintainable and automatable infrastructure

Focus: ‘Everything as Code’ and reproducible setups

CI/CD & Developer Experience

• Development and operation of GitLab CI/CD pipelines
• Creation and maintenance of templates and tooling for standardisation
• Empowering users through simple, robust self-service solutions

Focus: Reducing complexity for platform users

Platform development

• Integration of new services (e.g. Databricks, MS Foundry, AI Services)
• Evaluation of new technologies in the field of Platform Engineering & AI
• Active involvement in shaping the platform architecture

Consulting

• Providing users with support regarding platform queries and issues
• Analysing and resolving incidents
• Continuously improving the platform (stability, automation, UX)
• Optional: Participation in an on-call rota (arranged separately)
• Zusammenarbeit im agilen Kontext

• Working in a Scrum/SAFe environment (sprints, backlog, reviews)
• Close collaboration with data scientists, ML engineers and other platform teams
• Active contribution to planning, refinement and continuous improvement

Must-have Skills:

• Extensive practical experience in operating and troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters in production environments.
• In-depth knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform or OpenTofu, including modularisation and robust state management.
• Experience in designing and operating CI/CD pipelines with GitLab, including reusability and standardisation.
• Solid experience with Microsoft Azure, particularly in the areas of resource management, networking and identity & access management.
• Good knowledge of GitOps (e.g. ArgoCD) and declarative deployments.
• Proficiency in container technologies such as Docker and Linux-based systems.
• Experience with agile working methods, particularly Scrum and/or SAFe, as well as proficiency in managing backlogs, sprints and iterative development.

Strong Plus:

• Several years’ experience in platform engineering or in building internal developer platforms (IDP).
• Experience in designing and building self-service architectures, e.g. using templates, APIs or golden paths.
• Good knowledge of Python, particularly for automation and tooling.
• Experience in observability (logging, monitoring, tracing) in distributed systems.
• Basic understanding of security and compliance requirements in cloud environments.

Nice-to-have:

• Basic to advanced understanding of ML and MLOps processes.
• Experience with platforms such as Databricks or Microsoft Foundry.
• Knowledge of Argo (e.g. workflows) or comparable orchestration tools.
• Experience with template engines such as Copier or similar tools to enhance the developer experience.
• Experience working with open-source technologies and their integration into platform solutions.
